Participant Information & Resources

We’re so grateful that you’re part of the Falmouth Urine Diversion Eco-Toilet Project! Your participation is very important to help advance eco-toilets as tools to reduce pollution and improve water quality! Thank you!

Following are the eight steps of project participation:

1. Remote Assessment

The remote assessment is an initial phone call with a project team member. This call is an opportunity for the project team to learn about you and your home and for you to ask any questions. Most calls last between 30-minutes and 1-hour.

2. In-Home Assessment

During the In-Home Assessment a project team member and plumber will visit your home or project site. They will observe and take measurements of your bathroom(s), basement, and outdoor locations to gather information and develop some installation options and cost estimates. This will be a good time to discuss various options for toilet fixture types and urine storage locations. Assessments will last approximately two hours.

3. Options Summary & Cost Estimate

After the In-Home Assessment, the project team will create a report containing all information collected. This report will include 2-3 UD system configuration options for your consideration. Each option will include a cost estimate, permitting timeline, and additional information to support your decision. The report will be sent approximately two weeks after your assessment.

4. System Selection & Participant Agreements

Once you have decided which UD system you’d like to install, you should contact the project team to confirm. At that point you’ll need to review and sign a Reimbursement Contract and an Operation, Maintenance, and Monitoring Agreement and email to bryan.horsley@capecod.gov. Once both you and Barnstable County have signed both documents you are officially enrolled in the project!

5. Design & Permitting

Once you’ve confirmed your preferred system type, the project team will work to complete a system design and obtain all necessary permits. This phase could take some time.

6. System Installation

Once permits have been approved, the project team will begin working with you on acquiring system components and completing installation. You may receive a list of parts to order. Please keep detailed records of the parts you purchase for the projects, including all receipts as they will be needed for reimbursement.

7. Cost Reimbursement

Once your installation is complete you can submit receipts for eligible expenses to bryan.horsley@capecod.gov and Barnstable County will reimburse you with grant funds from MassDEP up to $8,250 (see the Reimbursement Contract for details).

8. System Monitoring & Sampling

With your system up and running, the project team will begin monitoring your system. Monitoring will entail at least quarterly visits (4 times per year) to inspect and make sure the system is functioning properly, to pump out collected urine, and to take samples for laboratory analysis. Monitoring will extend for 2 years from the time of system installation (see the Operation, Maintenance, and Monitoring Agreement for details). Once we’ve completed 2-years of monitoring, we’ll compile all the data from all participating sites and produce a final report to share with participants and MassDEP.
